Crown Lengthening

Periodontal procedures are available to lay the groundwork for restorative and cosmetic dentistry and/or to improve the health and esthetics of your smile.

Crown Lengthening is a surgical procedure that recontours the gum tissue and often the underlying bone surronding one or more teeth so that an adequate amount of healthy tooth is exposed. Crown lengthening is usually indicated for :

  • Restorative - may be recommended in order to make a restorative procedure possible (eg. placement of a crown). If a tooth is badly worn, short, decayed or fractured below the gum line, crown lengthening adjusts the gum and bone levels to gain access to more of the tooth so it can be restored. This procedure provides the necessary space between the supporting bone and crown, preventing the new crown from damaging gum tissues and bone.
  • Esthetics - when considering the key components of a pleasing smile, consideration must be given to both teeth and gums. Gum tissue needs to be in harmony and symmetrical with the teeth. Crown lengthening is utilized to correct any asymmetry in the gum tissue to produce a harmonious relationship with the teeth and thus create an esthetically pleasing smile.
