Inlays/Onlays

INLAYS

INLAY

Inlay = An indirect (lab processed) intracoronal restoration made of porcelain, composite resin or gold.

Indications for an Inlay :

  •  where more extensive restorations are required for medium-large sized defects/cavities within the tooth (intracoranal)
  • or as a more long term option to direct (placed chairside) tooth coloured fillings

IINLAY PREPARATION

Steps:

  • the defect/cavity is prepped, healthy tooth structure conserved
  • an impression taken
  • temporary restoration (provisional) is placed
  • custom-made dental restoration is crafted by a dental lab to correspond to the form of the prepared cavity

 INLAY COMPLETION

  •  custom-made dental restoration  is then luted (bonded or cemented) into the tooth.

The primary difference between an Inlay and an Onlay is the scope of coverage the restoration provides _ an Inlay is smaller, intracoronal (no cusps restored) "within the tooth"  vs  an Onlay extracoronal (involving cusps) "on the tooth".

ONLAYS

  • where more extensive restorations are required for medium-large sized defects/cavities affecting cusp(s)
  • in situations where the damage to a tooth is significant but not enough warrant a crown
